Ybor City -- the historic Cuban and Spanish immigrant neighborhood -- has a food and nightlife scene that rivals anything in Miami. The Riverwalk connects the waterfront to the Channelside district, the Tampa Museum of Art, and the Florida Aquarium. The food scene, anchored by the Cuban sandwich (Tampa's legitimate claim to the original), is excellent. And the port itself is efficient, well-organized, and easy to navigate.

The Port of Tampa Bay operates three cruise terminals, all located in the Channelside district adjacent to downtown Tampa.

Staying in Ybor City puts you in the most interesting neighborhood in Tampa -- a 10-minute rideshare from the port and walking distance to the best restaurants and bars in the city.

The Godfrey Hotel and Cabanas Tampa: On the waterfront in the Hyde Park/Bayshore area, with a pool complex and easy access to both Ybor City and the port.

Ybor City is the most important neighborhood in Tampa's history and one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Florida. Founded in the 1880s by Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants who came to work in the cigar factories, Ybor City was once the cigar capital of the world. The brick streets, the wrought-iron balconies, and the historic buildings have been preserved, and the neighborhood has evolved into one of the finest dining and nightlife districts in the South.

The Cuban sandwich: Tampa's claim to the original Cuban sandwich is legitimate and fiercely defended. The Tampa Cuban includes salami -- a nod to the Italian immigrant community -- which distinguishes it from the Miami version. Ybor City Museum State Park: The history of the cigar industry and the immigrant communities that built Ybor City is well-told here. The restored cigar worker's cottage is worth seeing.

The Tampa Riverwalk is a 2.6-mile waterfront promenade connecting the cruise terminals to the Tampa Museum of Art, the Glazer Children's Museum, the Florida Aquarium, and the Armature Works food hall. It is one of the finest urban waterfront walks in Florida.

Florida Aquarium: One of the best aquariums in the Southeast, with a strong focus on Florida's marine ecosystems. The shark exhibit and the coral reef tank are excellent. A good option for families with children on the day before embarkation.

Armature Works: A converted 1910 streetcar barn now housing a food hall with 20+ vendors, a rooftop bar, and event space. The best casual dining option on the Riverwalk.

Busch Gardens is a 335-acre theme park and zoo in north Tampa, about 20 minutes from the port.
