Whether you're an art enthusiast or a curious traveler, this region invites you to explore its deep cultural roots and discover the living traditions that make Appalachia unique.
The Augusta Heritage Center
The Augusta Heritage Center at Davis & Elkins College is the heart of Randolph County's cultural life. Each summer, the center hosts a series of week-long workshops that teach traditional Appalachian arts — old-time fiddle, flatfoot dancing, dulcimer, banjo, ballad singing, and dozens of other traditional crafts — to participants from around the world.
The Augusta Heritage Festival, held at the end of the summer workshop series, is a public celebration of these traditions. The festival features performances, dances, craft demonstrations, and jam sessions that showcase the skills developed during the summer workshops.
Artists at Work
The Artists at Work gallery in Elkins is a cooperative of local artists who work in a wide range of media — painting, pottery, jewelry, fiber arts, and more. The gallery's open studio format allows visitors to watch artists at work and purchase directly from the makers.
Outdoor Recreation
Randolph County's outdoor recreation scene is anchored by the Monongahela National Forest, which surrounds the county and provides access to hundreds of miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. The Seneca Rocks area — a dramatic quartzite formation that rises 900 feet above the North Fork Valley — is one of the most spectacular rock climbing destinations in the eastern United States.
