A Mackinac Island day trip from Detroit is one of the best day trips in the Midwest — and it's more doable than most people realize. The drive from Detroit to Mackinaw City (the ferry departure point) is about 4 hours, the ferry crossing takes 16 minutes, and you can have a full, satisfying day on the island before heading home.

Is it a long day? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely. Here's exactly how to plan it.

Distance: 290 miles
Drive Time: 4–4.5 hours (via I-75 North)
Route: I-75 North all the way — one of the most straightforward drives in Michigan, passing through Flint, Saginaw, and the northern Lower Peninsula.

Departure Time: Leave Detroit by 5:00–5:30am to catch the first ferry of the day and maximize your time on the island.

Gas: Fill up before leaving Detroit or in Gaylord (about 60 miles south of Mackinaw City). Gas prices increase as you approach the Straits.

Two ferry companies operate between Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island:

Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry — the largest ferry operator, with frequent departures and a well-organized boarding process.

Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry — another excellent option, with comfortable boats and frequent service.

Tip: The first ferry of the day (typically 7:30–8:00am) is the least crowded and gives you the most time on the island.

Leave early to catch the first ferry. Pack snacks and coffee for the drive.

Park at one of the ferry company's parking lots (about $15/day) and board the first available ferry.

You're on the island. The morning is the best time to be here — the day-trippers haven't arrived yet, the light is beautiful, and the fudge shops are just opening.

Rent bikes immediately at one of the shops near the ferry dock and cycle the 8-mile perimeter road before the crowds arrive. The morning light on Lake Huron is extraordinary.

Key Stops:

• Arch Rock (mile 3) — a dramatic natural limestone arch 146 feet above the lake
• British Landing (mile 5) — a beautiful picnic area on the north shore

Return bikes and walk up to Fort Mackinac. The fort's cannon firing (typically at 11:00am and 1:00pm) is a highlight. Allow 1–1.5 hours for a thorough visit.

The village has excellent lunch options. For a day trip, keep it simple:

• Yankee Rebel Tavern — excellent burgers and sandwiches in a historic setting
• Pink Pony — a beloved island institution with excellent food and harbor views
• Grab-and-go from one of the village delis for a picnic on the waterfront

This is fudge time. Visit Murdick's, Ryba's, or Joann's — watch the fudge being made on marble slabs and buy more than you planned to. Browse the village shops and enjoy the atmosphere.

If you have children, the Butterfly House is a must. If you want a different perspective on the island, a 45-minute horseback ride through the interior forests is excellent.

Walk the waterfront, enjoy the view of the Straits, and take your last photos of the island.

The late afternoon ferries are less crowded than the midday departures. Enjoy the crossing and the views of the island receding behind you.

The drive home is about 4–4.5 hours. Stop for dinner in Gaylord or Grayling.

Arrive Early: The first ferry of the day gives you the most time on the island and the smallest crowds.

Rent Bikes First: Bike rental shops near the ferry dock fill up quickly on summer mornings. Rent bikes as soon as you arrive.

Bring Cash: Many island vendors prefer cash.

Wear Comfortable Shoes: You'll walk and cycle several miles. Leave the dress shoes at home.

Pack a Bag: You'll be carrying your fudge, souvenirs, and any food you buy. A small daypack is useful.

Weather: Check the forecast before leaving. The island can be cool and windy even in summer — bring a light jacket.

If the day trip feels too rushed, consider making it a weekend trip. Leave Detroit on Friday evening, stay overnight in Mackinaw City (less expensive than the island), take the first ferry Saturday morning, spend the full day on the island, and drive home Sunday.
