Washington State packs more ecological diversity into a single state than almost anywhere in North America. Olympic National Park contains glacier-capped peaks, temperate rainforest, and 73 miles of wild Pacific coastline -- three completely different ecosystems within a single park boundary. The Hoh Rain Forest, with its moss-draped maples and Roosevelt elk, feels like a different planet from the sea stacks and tide pools of Rialto Beach.
Mount Rainier's Skyline Trail loops above Paradise Meadows with the glaciated summit filling the sky. Wildflower season in late July turns the meadows into a carpet of color that draws photographers from across the country. The 5.5-mile loop is one of the most rewarding day hikes in the Pacific Northwest.
