The Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and the only way to truly understand it is to hike into it. The Bright Angel Trail descends 4,380 feet to the Colorado River through a billion years of exposed geology -- a journey that takes you from the rim's pinyon-juniper forest through Redwall limestone, Tonto Platform, and Vishnu schist to the river at the bottom. Camping at Phantom Ranch puts you at the lowest point in the canyon for a night-sky experience that has no equal.

The Grand Canyon rewards the traveler who commits to going below the rim. The view from the South Rim is iconic, but the experience of standing at the river, looking up at walls that rise a mile above you, is something that photographs cannot capture. Plan ahead -- Phantom Ranch reservations open 15 months in advance and fill immediately.

This Arizona adventure is drawn from Outdoor Taste + Tour's reporting on Utah and the Colorado Plateau.
