Why Cozumel Is Different
Most Caribbean cruise ports are about the beach. Cozumel is about what's under the water.
The island sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second-largest coral reef system in the world — and the visibility, coral health, and marine life density in Cozumel's waters are exceptional by any standard. The Palancar Reef, accessible by boat from the pier in 20 minutes, is consistently ranked among the top five dive sites in the Western Hemisphere.
You don't have to be a certified diver to experience it. The snorkeling in Cozumel is the best in the Caribbean, and most of the top sites are accessible on guided tours that depart directly from the pier.
The Diving
Palancar Reef
Palancar is the signature Cozumel dive — a series of coral formations running along the southwestern edge of the island, with walls dropping to 100+ feet, swim-throughs, and marine life density that includes eagle rays, sea turtles, nurse sharks, and hundreds of reef fish species.
The reef is accessible to all certification levels. The shallow sections (15–40 feet) are appropriate for Open Water divers. The walls and deeper sections require Advanced certification.
Cost: $80–$120 for a two-tank dive with equipment. Book with Dive Paradise or Deep Blue Cozumel — both are PADI Five-Star operations with excellent safety records.
Columbia Reef
Columbia is the second-best dive in Cozumel — a drift dive along a wall with strong current that carries divers past enormous coral formations. The current makes it more appropriate for experienced divers, but the marine life is exceptional.
The Snorkeling
Chankanaab National Park
Chankanaab is the best all-in-one snorkeling destination in Cozumel. The park includes a protected lagoon with excellent coral and fish, a sea lion show, a Mayan archaeological replica site, and a beach with lounge chairs and restaurants.
Admission: $29 adults, $19 children. The snorkeling equipment rental is an additional $10.
Fury Catamaran Tours
Fury operates catamaran snorkel tours that visit two or three reef sites in a half-day. The tours include equipment, instruction for beginners, and an open bar on the return trip. This is the best value snorkeling excursion in Cozumel.
Cost: $55–$75 per person. Book directly with Fury rather than through the ship — same boats, lower price.
The Beach Clubs
Mr. Sancho's Beach Club
Mr. Sancho's is the best all-inclusive beach club in Cozumel — a full day pass includes food, drinks, beach chairs, and access to the pool and water sports equipment. The location on the western shore has calm, clear water ideal for swimming.
Day pass: $65–$85 per person. Book in advance for peak season.
Playa Mia Grand Beach Park
Playa Mia is the most family-friendly beach club in Cozumel, with a waterpark, trampolines, and a kids' area in addition to the beach and pool. The all-inclusive package is the best value for families.
Day pass: $75–$95 adults, $55–$65 children.
The Tulum Day Trip
Tulum, the Mayan cliff-top ruins on the mainland, is 2 hours from Cozumel by ferry and bus. The trip requires a full day — you'll need to be off the ship by 8am and back by 4pm — but the ruins are genuinely spectacular.
The combination of Mayan architecture and Caribbean coastline at Tulum is unlike anything else in Mexico. Book through the ship's excursion desk for this one — the ship guarantee is worth it for a trip that requires precise timing.
The Bottom Line
Cozumel is the best shore excursion port in the Western Caribbean. The diving is world-class. The snorkeling is the best in the Caribbean. And the beach clubs are excellent value.
