Fall is the most popular season in New Ulm — and Oktoberfest is the reason. New Ulm's Oktoberfest celebration — held on the last two weekends of September and the first weekend of October — is one of the finest in America, with authentic German food, beer from Schell's Brewery (the second-oldest family-owned brewery in the country), traditional music, and dancing.

New Ulm's Oktoberfest is a genuine celebration of German-American heritage — not a tourist spectacle, but a community event that has been celebrated for generations. The festival features:

• Authentic German food — bratwurst, schnitzel, sauerkraut, pretzels, and strudel
• Schell's Brewery beer — the festival's official beer, brewed in New Ulm since 1860

Winter in New Ulm is defined by two events: Christmas in the City (December) and Fasching (February). Christmas in the City is a beautiful celebration of German Christmas traditions, with a Christmas market, holiday lighting, and the Glockenspiel playing Christmas carols. Fasching — the German equivalent of Mardi Gras — is a lively pre-Lenten celebration with costumes, music, and dancing.

Christmas in the City: Held the first weekend of December, Christmas in the City transforms New Ulm's downtown into a beautiful Christmas market with German food, crafts, and holiday music. The Glockenspiel — New Ulm's famous carillon clock tower — plays Christmas carols throughout the weekend.

Fasching: Held in February, Fasching is a lively celebration of German carnival traditions, with costumes, music, and dancing. The event is less well-known than Oktoberfest but equally authentic.

Summer in New Ulm is festival season — the town hosts several excellent events, including Heritagefest (a celebration of German-American heritage in July) and the Brown County Fair (August).

Heritagefest: Held in mid-July, Heritagefest is a two-weekend celebration of German-American heritage with music, food, and cultural events. The festival is smaller than Oktoberfest but equally authentic.

Outdoor Activities: New Ulm's parks and trails are excellent in summer. Flandrau State Park — just south of town — offers excellent hiking, swimming, and camping.
