Where the Wild Things Glow

There is something different about a zoo after dark. Familiar pathways disappear into the evening, ordinary trees become silhouettes, and every turn feels just a little more mysterious. This winter, Ellen Trout Zoo is adding something entirely new to that night-time landscape: thousands of lights, glowing animals, holiday traditions and a little bit of Christmas magic.

Beginning November 19, the Ellen Trout Zoo will debut Wild Lights, its first full-scale holiday light experience and an event designed to make visitors see the zoo in an entirely different way.

Held Thursday through Sunday evenings through January 3, with some holiday schedule adjustments, Wild Lights will transform the zoo into an illuminated wildlife wonderland after sunset. Tickets will be available both online and at the gate, with admission details to be announced.

And this is not simply Christmas lights with a zoo as the backdrop.

Animals will take center stage in the displays, with glowing wildlife appearing throughout the grounds alongside more traditional touches of the season. Light tunnels, themed areas, photo opportunities and other interactive elements will encourage visitors to wander rather than follow a prescribed route. Guests may stop to write a letter to Santa, pause for a family photo or simply turn down another pathway to see what is waiting around the corner.

That freedom is intentional. Wild Lights is meant to be explored.

A visit will likely take anywhere from one to two hours, depending on just how much visitors choose to do along the way. Those who want to linger will find plenty of reasons to do so, with seasonal food and drinks, shopping and activities planned throughout the evening.

Holiday flavors will be part of the experience as well. Hot chocolate, mulled cider and seasonal treats are among the offerings being planned, with additional food and beverage options still being developed as opening night approaches.

At The Night Market, visitors will also be able to take a little of Wild Lights home with them. Plans include event-themed memorabilia, with other zoo-inspired gifts and keepsakes expected to round out the selection.

While Ellen Trout Zoo’s daytime experience is built around seeing its living residents, Wild Lights is a separate after-hours event. Most animals will be tucked away for the evening, leaving their illuminated counterparts to take over the pathways. Proceeds from the event will benefit Friends of Ellen Trout Zoo, the nonprofit organization that supports the zoo and its programs.

But the real ambition behind Wild Lights is harder to measure in lights, activities or cups of cocoa.

It is meant to feel like Christmas did when you were a child.

The hope is that adults will recognize a little of that old anticipation again — the excitement of seeing lights glowing in the distance, staying out after dark and discovering something magical around the next corner. For children experiencing it now, perhaps Wild Lights will become one of those traditions they remember years later.

And unlike a display viewed through a car window, this one is meant to be stepped into, wandered through and experienced at your own pace.

Ellen Trout Zoo may be tucked into the Pineywoods of East Texas, but Wild Lights is being created with visitors well beyond Lufkin in mind, from neighboring communities and across the region to Houston and western Louisiana.
