One of the best ways to soak in the fall foliage is to follow The Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Byway, also known as SC-11. It provides a scenic alternative to driving the Interstate and is packed with beauty and adventure.
While driving on SC-11, you will encounter small, picturesque mountain towns with big southern charm. In Oconee County, Walhalla is a great place to jump off and experience southern hospitality with a view. Downtown Walhalla is lined with locally owned restaurants and antique shops. Just outside of town, you won’t want to miss Stumphouse Tunnel and Issaqueena Falls for your leaf-peeping pleasure. Issaqueena Falls provides visitors the opportunity to experience a 100-foot thunderous cascade from a viewing deck, giving you an incredible view without breaking a sweat.
For more adventurous visitors, Oconee County delivers excitement and awe-inspiring views. Experience the fall magic by gliding through the treetops at Chattooga Ridge Canopy Tours or see the fall color unfold while rafting through Class II-IV rapids on the Chattooga River with Nantahala Outdoor Center or Wildwater Rafting.
SC-11 will also lead you the quiet corner of northern Greenville County. Caesar’s Head State Park is a great place to jump off for breathtaking fall foliage views. One of the most popular trails at Caesar’s Head State Park is Raven Cliff Falls, which boats a spectacular 400-foot cascade and is one of the most photographed waterfalls in our state.
