Just east of Atlanta, Conyers, Georgia, trades city streets for granite landscapes, wooded trails and an outdoor playground shaped by Olympic history.
Adventure takes center stage at Georgia International Horse Park, the 1,400-acre legacy venue of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. The park hosted the Games’ equestrian events and the first-ever Olympic mountain biking competition, and riders can still take on miles of multi-terrain mountain bike trails today. With equestrian trails, nature areas and a calendar of competitions and outdoor events, the park remains one of Conyers’ signature destinations.
More outdoor exploration awaits in the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. The landscape connects miles of trails, granite outcrops, forests, wetlands and historic sites. Nearby Panola Mountain State Park offers hiking, archery, geocaching, birding and tree-climbing adventures, while the paved PATH system gives cyclists, runners and walkers another way to experience the region.
For something a little quieter, head north to Haralson Mill Covered Bridge. Built in 1997 using a design inspired by early 1800s covered bridges, the wooden span crosses Mill Rock Creek near scenic trails and Randy Poynter Lake, creating an inviting stop for a walk, picnic or photo.
Visitors can also explore the protected wetlands and wildlife habitat of Big Haynes Creek Nature Center, paddle or fish around Black Shoals and Randy Poynter Lake, or follow the trails through South Rockdale Community Park.
