Spring is the most underrated season for outdoor adventure in America. The wildflowers are blooming, the waterfalls are at their most dramatic (fed by snowmelt), the crowds are smaller than summer, and the temperatures are perfect for hiking, cycling, and paddling. The national parks are open but not yet overwhelmed, and the natural world is waking up from winter in spectacular fashion.

The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve — in the high desert north of Los Angeles — is one of the most spectacular wildflower displays in America. In a good year (when winter rains are abundant), the hills turn a brilliant orange with California poppies in March and April.

Crested Butte is known as the "Wildflower Capital of Colorado" — the town's high-altitude meadows explode with wildflowers in July, but the spring wildflower season (May–June) is also excellent, with beautiful displays of columbines, paintbrush, and lupine.

Shenandoah National Park's spring wildflower season — particularly the trillium bloom in April and May — is one of the finest in the Appalachians. The park's combination of wildflowers, waterfalls, and mountain views creates a spring experience of extraordinary beauty.

Yosemite's waterfalls are at their most dramatic in spring, when the snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada feeds the park's extraordinary falls. Yosemite Falls (2,425 feet — the tallest waterfall in North America), Bridalveil Fall, and Nevada Fall are all spectacular in May and June.
